Story
Garnet Ombré is a hand-built paper relief composed of a grid of square hand-crumpled tiles — each one a distinct unit in a layered paper construction that collectively builds a deep garnet crimson at the upper register, graduating through dusty rose and blush pink to near-white at the lower edge. The ombré is a physical arrangement of individually colored tiles, not a printed gradient: the transition is legible at proximity as a sequence of discrete material decisions rather than a single applied effect. Gold catches in the crumple folds of certain tiles, present only where the fold intercepts ambient light — a controlled luminosity that shifts as viewing angle and room light change, resisting reduction to a fixed appearance. Paper as a relief material absorbs rather than reflects, and the matte depth of the garnet register carries a weight that reads as material presence rather than pigment on a flat support. At distance the piece functions as a color-field work with an unusual warmth in the upper register; at proximity the individual tile construction asserts itself and the hand-crumpled texture adds a quiet three-dimensionality that does not compress into photography. Enclosed in a clear acrylic box frame, the relief depth and tile edges are visible components of the composition rather than elements concealed behind glass.
