Story
Drift | Salt is a hand-built paper relief in the Drift series — hundreds of individual layered paper tiles constructing a surface where color holds close to the spectrum of mineral white, moving from a cooled salt white at the outer registers through pale warm grey at the center. The tonal restraint is the defining characteristic: without a strong color shift to carry the eye, the relief itself becomes the load-bearing element, and the dimensional tile construction reads as texture, depth, and quiet surface variation rather than color. Paper as a relief material behaves differently from ceramic or metal — the tiles absorb ambient light rather than reflecting it, which gives the white field a matte complexity that resists the flatness of painted surfaces. At distance the piece reads as a monochromatic field study; at proximity the tile construction becomes legible, and the layered relief articulates a surface that changes as the ambient light changes throughout the day. Enclosed in a clear acrylic float frame, the work presents itself as a dimensional object with visible edges rather than a framed image.
