Negative Relief is a sculptural mirror defined by depth, construction, and controlled irregularity. Inspired by the stepped geometry of rice terrace fields, the piece is built as a layered relief rather than a flat reflective surface. A hand-welded metal framework forms the structural backbone, creating multiple descending planes that recede and overlap with architectural precision. Within each tier, individually carved mirror segments are set by hand, following the organic contours of the frame rather than conforming to a single continuous sheet.
The mirror surface fractures reflection into subtle shifts and breaks, producing a quiet, spatial distortion that changes with movement and light. The form reads as excavated rather than added—negative space becomes the dominant gesture, giving the piece a sculptural gravity uncommon in wall-mounted mirrors.
