Deep Ocean Glow

A whale rendered in dark blue against a black field, illuminated from within by LED — the figure holds its mass in near-total darkness, present as much through the quality of light as through the image itself. The work belongs to a visual register of depth and pressure, where form is perceived before it is fully read.

At 59.1" by 15.7", the vertical proportion compresses the figure, giving it the quality of something seen through a narrow aperture — a glimpse rather than a full view. The LED source is integral to the composition; without it, the image recedes entirely. The light is the subject as much as the form it describes.
